There are many reasons build up can occur in a shower – hard water, soap residue, and mineral deposits. Many of these can be prevented by doing a thorough weekly cleaning of the cultured marble as explained in a previous article. However, not all forms of build-up can be prevented. I would like to discuss ways you can safely restore your cultured marble shower, sink, or tub surround from any unwanted build-up.
Heavy Duty Cleaners
Normally we advise you to not use heavy duty cleaners to clean your cultured marble surfaces because they can damage the cultured marble gel surface. However, a heavy-duty cleaner used in a small amount may be used to help remove unwanted build-up. Remember to wear proper safety equipment, such as gloves and safety glasses, when using any heavy-duty cleaners. Liquid cleaners are recommended, such as Lime-away. We recommend using the following method to clean your cultured marble surface with a heavy duty cleaner:
Apply a small amount to the surface of the cultured marble or to a cloth or sponge
Using a cloth or sponge, gently rub the cleaner over the surface where the build-up has occurred.
Using a clean cloth or sponge, rinse the entire cultured marble surface with clean water.
Squeegee the surface completely dry.
Prevent Future Build-up
You’ve heard it said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. The best way to prevent build-up from occurring in your shower, on your countertops, or on your tub surrounds is by regular cleanings using the prescribed methods provided to you at the time of installation. You may also consider using a liquid soap rather than bar soap to reduce the amount of soap scum buildup in the shower.
If you are doing regular cleanings and are still experiencing build-up, remember that it is okay to use a heavy duty cleaner once in a while to remove the build-up. Remember that it is best to use small amounts of the cleaner. Also, remember that it is best to remove the residue of the cleaner by thoroughly rinsing with water and squeegeeing dry. By following these guidelines you should enjoy a nice long life with your beautiful cultured marble shower.
